The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is an international sightseeing route some 90 kilometers (56 miles) long. The route goes across the 3,000-meter-high North Alpine mountains, the so-called “roof of ,” and connects Toyama and Shinano Omachi. You can enjoy the panorama by taking a train, highland bus, trolley bus, cable car, and ropeway. Since the lines opened in June 1971, the Tateyama area has been transformed from an isolated spot into one of the nation’s best sightseeing areas, where a million guests visit every year.

Murodo-daira of Tateyama has one of the heaviest snows in the world, and the reaches about seven meters (23 ft) on average. In particular, the mantle at Otani, a five-minute walk from Murodo Station, sometimes gets more than 20 meters (65.6 ft) because of snowdrifts. The famous “ Walls” are formed by expelling this heavy , and the 500-meter-long area with such walls is open to sightseers from mid-April to late May. [Source: Japan National Tourism Organization]

Japan Earthquake: Before and After – In Focus – The Atlantic

In just over two weeks, will be observing the one-year anniversary of the disastrous magnitude 9.0 and tsunami that struck its east coast in March of 2011. The destruction was unprecedented and the loss of life and property were staggering — more than 15,800 are confirmed dead, with another 3,300 still listed as missing nearly a year later. Photographers documented the many faces of this tragedy and have now returned to give us a look at the difference a year can make, re-shooting places that were photographed during and immediately after the quake.

Picture of the Day: Miyajima Torii – Japan’s Floating Gate

Miyajima Torii is the famous floating to the sacred Itsukushima . It is known as one of the ‘Three Views of ’. The gate of the Itsukushima (an UNESCO World Heritage Site) is one of Japan’s most popular tourist attractions, and it has existed since 1168, though the current gate dates back to 1875.

It is approximately 16 metres high, and was built in a four-legged style which means it has four additional legs along with the primary columns. This provides additional stability as the gate only sits on the surface of the mud. The sheer weight and adhesion to the mud is sufficient to prevent any significant movement of the Miyajima Torii even during typhoons

Miyajima Torii only appears to be floating at high tide; when the tide is low, the gate is surrounded by mud and can be accessed by foot from the island. It is common practice for visitors to place coins in the cracks of the legs of the gate and make a wish. [Source]
